West Michigan Thunderstorm

7 Tips For Driving Your Ford Through a Severe West Michigan Thunderstorm

So the saying goes in West Michigan: if you don't like the weather, wait 15 minutes. Sometimes it can be pretty funny, but when you're driving along I-96 and some severe weather develops right over your head - not so much. Because the beautiful weather in West Michigan can sometimes turn ugly out of nowhere, Borgman Ford has put together a list of driving tips from MyFordMag.com that can help. The best thing you can do in heavy rain is to pull over and wait it out, but just in case that's not an option, here are 7 driving tips for navigating a bad rainstorm: more Read More 1. Slow Down The first thing you should do is slow down. This will give you more control and more time to react to other vehicles, tree limbs, or other debris in the roadway. You will need both time and control when it’s raining heavily, as the road gets pretty slippery and visibility is limited. 2. The Start of the Storm Can Be Dangerous When the rain first starts, moisture mixes with the oil on the road and makes everything slippery and dangerous. Heavy rains will eventually wash the oil away—but that’s when you have to worry about hydroplaning, which is when your car loses contact with the road and almost feels as though it’s floating. 3. Hydroplaning? Take Your Foot Off The Gas. If you find yourself hydroplaning, keep calm, take your foot off the gas and steer in a safe direction. Avoid hydroplaning by slowing down, turning off cruise control and avoiding sudden braking and turns. You’re more likely to hydroplane on non-grooved asphalt roads than ribbed concrete —particularly if there are tire ruts worn into the asphalt. Also, avoid any areas on the road where deeper water collects. 4. Do Not Attempt to Drive Through Deep Puddles Puddles can hide some pretty big potholes, so try to drive around them if you can while being mindful of vehicles in adjacent lanes. Do not drive in areas that are flooded or have moving water. Deep water can wreak havoc on your electrical system and engine. As little as a foot of water can float some vehicles, and two feet of rushing water can sweep vehicles away, including SUVs and pick-ups. 5. Turn On Your Headlights With heavy rain comes dark skies, so turn on your headlights, but don’t use your high beams. The extra light will refract against the water droplets - making visibility worse. Plus, other drivers will thank you too. 6. Flip On Defrosters & Set A/C or Heat to "Fresh Air" Turn on your defrosters to reduce fog on your windows, and set your air conditioner or heater to the "Fresh-Air" setting instead of "Recirculate." 7. Keep Your Distance Giving yourself enough time to react and stop is going to be key. Maintaining a safe following distance from the traffic ahead is a good practice anyway, but sudden braking can send you into a tailspin in heavy rain. The spray from trucks or large vehicles can also obscure your vision, so keep your distance or try to pass them if it becomes safe to do so. Whatever The Weather - Drive With Confidence Being prepared is another important part of staying safe on the roadway - especially during heavy rains or other severe weather. If it's been a while since your vehicle has been looked over, Schedule An Appointment with our Service Center to make sure your wipers, tires, brakes, and headlights are in good shape and working properly. If you're looking for a dependable, safe, and West-Michigan-friendly vehicle for your adventures, visit Borgman Ford today and check out our lineup of capable Ford Vehicles. 2017 Ford Escape vs 2017 Mazda CX-5

Head to Head: The 2017 Ford Escape vs. The 2017 Mazda CX-5

Borgman Ford Mazda in Grand Rapids has been providing high-quality New and Used vehicles to West Michigan since 1960. An important part of what makes our service the Best in the West is making sure you get matched with the perfect auto for your lifestyle and needs. In order to help our West Michigan SUV shoppers make an informed decision, Borgman Ford Mazda is putting two of the most versatile SUVs on our lot head to head: the 2017 Ford Escape and the 2017 Mazda CX-5. more Both of these Light SUVs are well-equipped to meet the needs of the average Michigan adventurer and can handle the role of a family car without breaking a sweat. They both seat 5, have ample cargo space, and hold their own in West Michigan's treacherous winter weather. Read on below to see how they stack up against each other and feel free to visit our showroom in Grand Rapids to compare them yourself! Round 1: Powertrain & Efficiency The 2017 Ford Escape Powertrain If you enjoy the extra space and utility of an SUV, but also like avoiding the gas station, the 1.5L EcoBoost iVCT Engine is the best of both worlds and standard on the SE and Titanium models. Thanks in part to its advanced turbocharger and clever engineering, the 1.5L puts out 179 horsepower and 177 pounds-per-foot of torque while getting an EPA-estimated 23 city, 30 highway, and 26 combined miles per gallon. Other available engines include the standard 2.5L iVCT with 168 hp and 170 lbs/ft. torque, and the New 2.0L Twin-Scroll EcoBoost with 245 hp and 275 lb/ft. of torque. Both EcoBoost engines on the Escape feature Auto Start-Stop Technology to further improve efficiency. All Escape SUVs come equipped with Ford's 6-Speed Automatic Transmission with SelectShift® Capability with Intelligent 4WD available on SE and standard on Titanium. The 2017 Mazda CX-5 Powertrain Rather than having a slew of different engine options with different availabilities, Mazda set out to make one well-rounded engine for the CX-5 that checks all the boxes - with impressive results. The 2.5L SKYACTIV-G Engine puts out 187 hp and 185 lb/ft of torque, which is pretty much on-par with others in its class and gets 24 city and 31 highway mpg. This is where it gets really interesting - this engine is naturally-aspirated, direct-injected, and boasts an absolutely silly compression ratio of 13:0 on 87 octane gas. For the layperson, the higher the compression ratio, the harder the engine can squeeze the fuel/air mixture before it ignites and the more power you get for the same amount of gas. The caveat is this: lower octane gasoline will get hot and prematurely explode under these conditions, which causes "knocking" and is why some cars are "Premium Only." How Mazda did this with regular gas is a complicated topic, but suffice to say that their engineers did some truly inspired work to optimize the exhaust system and keep the temperature down. You can read about it in full detail here. The 2017 Mazda CX-5 comes equipped with the SKYACTIV-Drive 6-Speed Automatic Transmission with manual shift and Sport Mode, and All-Wheel Drive is available on every trim level. Powertrain Winner: The 2017 Ford Escape Despite the CX-5's impressive engineering and power plant, the 2017 Ford Escape wins the round. It came down to this: Despite even the Ford 1.5L EcoBoost engine falling just short of Mazda on efficiency, the Ford 2.0L Twin-Scroll EcoBoost blows everything else out of the water in terms of responsiveness and utility. If you're looking for more options, the Ford Escape is the way to go. Round 2: Interior & Tech The 2017 Ford Escape Interior While sitting at the helm of the 2017 Ford Escape, you'll immediately notice that many of the advanced features of the SUV are right there at your fingertips. The seats are comfortable, and despite being an SUV, the cockpit feels very car-like. In addition, there are are other helpful features such as the Lane-Keeping System, Adaptive Cruise Control and Collision Warning with Brake Support, Enhanced Active Park Assist, the Hands-Free, Foot-Activated Liftgate, and more. Adding Ford SYNC 3 ups the ante with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and automatic updates over Wi-Fi. With the Titanium trim, you'll enjoy other luxurious features such as leather-trimmed seats and a 10-Speaker Audio System from Sony. The 2017 Ford Escape also features an optional Panoramic Vista Moonroof that stretches all the way to the rear seats. With the rear seats folded up, it can carry 34 cu/ft. of cargo and 68 cu/ft. when they're folded down. The 2017 Mazda CX-5 Interior Mazda pays extra attention to the interior of their vehicles, especially on how the vehicle feels while driving, and it shows on the 2017 Mazda CX-5. Right away you'll notice that anything you'll ever need to interact with while driving is within comfortable reach. Mazda’s human-centric design really shines in the interior of the 2017 Mazda CX-5 crossover, with thoughtfully selected textures and finishes, and perfect positioning of door handles and controls. The level of comfort and style only increases with the Touring and Grand Touring options, adding touches such as a leather-wrapped steering wheel and gear selector, heated leather seats, and more. The shining example of Mazda's ergonomic effort is the Commander Control knob located just below the gear selector, which allows you to intuitively access features of the dash-mounted touch screen without leaning over. The 2017 Mazda CX-5 also features many of the same types of features as the Ford Escape, such as Radar Cruise Control and Smart City Brake Support. The BOSE Audio system and other refinements like the Heads-Up display with current speed and navigation make the interior feel more refined, but cargo space is where it falls short: 30.9 cu/ft seats up and 59.6 with the seats down. Interior Winner: The 2017 Mazda CX-5 Don't get us wrong, the interior of the 2017 Ford Escape, especially when it's decked out, makes it an absolute joy to drive, and having more cargo space is a plus. However, the attention to detail, hand-crafted refinement, and driver-centric design of the 2017 Mazda CX-5 is in a whole different league. If you visit us for a test drive you'll definitely be able to see and feel the difference. Round 3: Price & Value The 2017 Ford Escape Value Starting at only $23,750 MSRP, the 2017 Ford Escape S gives you an adventure-ready SUV with Ford SYNC and other helpful features, a solid 2.5L engine, and more. Moving all the way up to the Titanium trim rolls in many luxurious features such as SYNC 3, the Sony sound system, leather seats, that 2.0L Twin-Scroll EcoBoost, and more for $29,250. This is a great SUV for just about everyone. It's a daily driver with a little adventure in its heart, it handles a lot like a typical sedan, has a good amount of "get up and go," and the price tag is pretty accessible too. The 2017 Mazda CX-5 Value The 2017 Mazda CX-5 Sport, the base model of the SUV, starts at just $24,045 MSRP. For this, you get a good-sized Crossover SUV with a very efficient powertrain and some pretty cool diver-focused features. As you go up the trim levels, the CX-5 pretty much stays within $600 reach of the Ford Escape, and whether that increase is justified has a lot to do with your personal preferences. The CX-5 and the Escape have very similar features, such as their powered rear liftgates, collision detection, and backup cams. What sets the CX-5 apart on value is its spirited driving performance and ability to compete with the more luxurious brands in terms of interior styling and refinement - and at a comparatively lower $29,395 MSRP. Best Value For Money: Tie between the 2017 Ford Escape & 2017 Mazda CX-5 If you're looking for a reasonably-priced daily driver with plenty of space that's good on gas in the summer and can handle itself in winter, either of these SUVs fit the bill. This is where many SUV shoppers in West Michigan start when looking for their next SUV, but past this point, choosing the 2017 Ford Escape or the 2017 Mazda CX-5 comes down to what you see as value. The Ford Escape isn't quite as fuel-efficient, but the added cargo space and lower cost can make up for that. The Mazda CX-5 costs a little more, but the fuel savings and more luxurious interior might justify the cost. There could be other reasons you have to choose one over the other. It's completely up to you! And The Winner Is: West Michigan SUV Shoppers Based on available engines, interior design and trim, and a dead-heat on overall value, we have a tie. Borgman Ford Mazda is declaring the winner of this Head to Head anyone in West Michigan looking for a comfortable, dependable, and affordable SUV. Even if you favor one of these SUVs over the other, we're proud to offer both of them to our SUV customers in Grand Rapids at affordable prices. The New Mazda CX-9 comes equipped for West Michigan's crazy weather

Drive confidently in a capable Mazda CX-9 SUV from Borgman Borgman Mazda knows how unpredictable the weather can be in Grand Rapids and West Michigan. That's why we're proud to offer the capable Mazda CX-9, packed with features that help drivers all over go confidently into the ever-changing weather. This article written on InsideMazda describes four of the many features you'll find inside a New Mazda CX-9 SUV, and showcases them against the typical weather conditions of the four seasons. Here are some highlights from the article: A crossover SUV must be steadfast, reliable and comfortable enough to drive to work or across the country, no matter what Mother Nature has in store. So, of course, Mazda’s engineers created the midsize CX-9 to be a master of all four seasons. Winter Confident drivers are safer drivers, so the Mazda CX-9 comes equipped with a predictive All-Wheel Drive system called i-ACTIV, which is designed to inspire confidence, whether driving in snow or on dry pavement. The predictive AWD system monitors 27 different driving variables, including traction control, the angle of the steering wheel, and even how often you are using the windshield wipers. Spring Springtime driving conditions can be extremely variable. Heavy rains, late snow and sunshine can all be forecasted in a single day. Drivers need to know that no matter the climate conditions, they’ll be able to confidently pilot their vehicle to their next destination. To help keep occupants safe under low visibility conditions, CX-9 offers Mazda’s unique i-ACTIVSENSE suite of safety innovations. For example, Smart City Brake Support uses infrared radar to cut engine power and prime the braking system if a potential collision is detected and will apply the brakes if necessary. Summer Summers are full of road trips, which means drivers will have plenty of opportunities to enjoy the powerful and fuel-efficient drivetrain in the CX-9. Drivers won’t have to worry about passing vehicles on the highway or climbing a steady grade. With an ample 310 lb-ft of torque delivered almost instantaneously from its turbocharged 2.5-liter SKYACTIV-G engine, CX-9 can keep climbing any mountain road less traveled while towing a trailer, jet skis or whatever an active family may have in mind for a summer excursion. Fall As it gets darker earlier in the fall, drivers will appreciate the standard LED headlights and tail lights on the Mazda CX-9. They're nearly 35-percent brighter than a standard halogen unit and can throw light 10-percent farther than a comparable xenon HID headlight, shining brighter, clearer and more efficiently. Kevin Ryan

The Ford Foundation is Returning to Detroit & Hires Kevin Ryan as Program Officer

Borgman is pleased to share with Ford fans in Grand Rapids and West Michigan that the Ford Foundation is opening a new office in the Motor City. After moving from Detroit, MI to New York City back in 1953, the Ford Foundation was better-equipped to advance human welfare both within our country and across the developing world. Now, after 64 years, the Ford Foundation is opening a new office in Detroit and has hired Kevin Ryan, a Detroit native, as the office's program officer. This article by Chad Livengood and published on Crain's Detroit Business tells more about the new location, Kevin Ryan, and what this could mean for Detroit's future. more Read More Here is an excerpt from the article: The Ford Foundation is establishing its first presence in Detroit since leaving the Motor City in 1953 as it ramps up a major initiative to invest in affordable housing in the city where it was founded 81 years ago by Edsel Ford. The New York-based international foundation announced Wednesday it has hired Detroit native Kevin Ryan from the New York Foundation to be its new Detroit-based program officer. “ will be working from Detroit and working with grantee partners there so we don’t have to have staff parachute in and out," Ford Foundation President Darren Walker told Crain's. “I think it’s important because having someone close to the ground, someone working in the city, is a more effective way to do our work." Ryan comes to Ford Foundation after 14 years at the New York Foundation, where he managed a portfolio of grants for New York City community organizations. Walker's decision to plant an employee in Detroit is the latest effort he's made to rebuild the foundation's ties to the city where its endowment was first generated from the estates of auto baron Henry Ford and his son, Edsel, who chartered the foundation in 1936. In June 2015, Walker brought the foundation's annual board meeting to Detroit, the first since 1948, following the Ford Foundation's unprecedented $125 million contribution to the "grand bargain" deal that settled Detroit's historic bankruptcy and shielded the city's art collection from creditors. The Ford Foundation's Detroit program officer will be charged with overseeing the $15 million in grants the foundation is making in Detroit annually, the most of any U.S. city, Walker said. That total is in addition to its $8.5 million yearly payment to the bankruptcy "grand bargain" fund used to boost Detroit's municipal pension funds and shield assets of the Detroit Institute of Arts from ever being sold. Which Truck Has Better Engine Options? The Ford F-150: The 2017 Ford F-150 sports 4 different gasoline engines to suit a variety of different roles. First up is the highly-efficient 2.7L EcoBoost V6 with Automatic Start & Stop technology, following with the 3.5L V6, the 3.5L EcoBoost V6, and the 5.0L V8. The V8 may be upgraded to accept alternative fuels. The 2017 Ford F-250 Super Duty: The 2017 Ford F-250 Super Duty has two engines: The 6.2L Gasoline V8 and the 6.7L Power Stroke Turbo Diesel. The 6.2L may also be upfitted to accept alternative fuels. The Verdict: Both trucks have purpose-built solutions to solve different problems. Those looking for more options and moderate power should seek the F-150, while those that need an absurd amount of torque or prefer to use diesel fuel should consider the F-250 Super Duty. Which Truck Hauls & Tows More? The 2017 Ford F-150: When properly equipped, the 2017 Ford F-150 is able to two up to 12,200 pounds conventionally, which is considerable for a truck in the "half-ton" segment. It can also carry up to 2,210 pounds on its back. The 2017 Ford F-250 Super Duty: Thanks to its fully boxed high-strength steel frame and other innovations, the 2017 F-250 Super Duty is capable of towing 21,000 pounds when properly equipped - even more with the 5th-wheel or gooseneck hitch prep package. The Super Duty also can haul up to 7,630 pounds. The Verdict: There's a clear winner here, and it's the Super Duty. However, both trucks outperform others in their weight classes with smart towing accessories and driver-assist features - many of them are class-exclusives. The F-150 has the highest payload in its class, and the Super Duty takes home best-in-class towing, payload, and GCWR. Which Truck is More Fuel Efficient? The 2017 Ford F-150: All thanks to innovations and breakthroughs in weight savings, turbocharging, and engineering, the Ford F-150 will get anywhere from 18 to 24 miles per gallon, with a little more or less depending on load and driving habits. The 2017 Ford F-250 Super Duty: Pound for pound the 2017 Ford Super Duty outperforms the competition in terms of fuel efficiency, while at the same time beating them at power. That's a winning combination, but not against the more nimble Ford F-150. The Verdict: The Ford F-150 wins this round, but it was close when compared to the Super Duty's 6.7L Power Stroke Turbo Diesel. Which Truck is the right choice for my business? The 2017 Ford F-150: Packed with driver-assist features, engine options, and more, this truck will handily perform any task suited for half-ton pickups. It can haul a moderate amount of material to job sites, and there are some light upfits available. This truck is durable, incredibly versatile, and an ideal choice for an everyday service calls around West Michigan. If the need arises for some heavy lifting, it can definitely hold its own, but its greatest advantage over the Super Duty is fuel efficiency. The 2017 Ford F-250 Super Duty: Loaded up with new heavy duty parts for 2017, the Ford F-250 Super Duty had made excellent use of the weight savings from its aluminum-alloy body. Despite being fully engineered for abuse and capable of some impressive feats of strength, the Super Duty weighs in about 300 pounds lighter than its predecessor, which saves on fuel costs. The number of upfit options for the Super Duty is immense, with packages for snow plow trucks, utility vehicles, cherry-pickers, tow trucks, and more. The Super Duty is much more capable and customizable than the F-150, but the trade-off comes out of its acquisition and operating cost. Whether you need the versatility of a "half-ton" truck like the 2017 Ford F-150, or the sheer strength of a "three-quarter-ton" such as the 2017 Ford F-250 Super Duty, visit the Borgman Ford showroom in Grand Rapids today!
