Ford Successfully Uses Graphene To Protect & Quiet Engine Parts
We imagine a good number of West Michigan Ford Performance fans know what carbon fiber is, or at the very least what it looks like. It's commonly found as a trim option in Ford vehicles with sport packages because of its widespread use in motorsports. Though purely aesthetic in this case, carbon technology has seen widespread use in aerospace, performance racing, and more recently in consumer goods because of its ultra light weight and incredible durability. more Read More The 'carbon' in carbon fiber is simply graphite (the same stuff that's in pencil lead,) which is just trillions of sheets of carbon atoms stacked on top of each other. A single, one-atom-thick sheet of perfectly-arranged carbon atoms is called graphene, and it's been one of the holy grails of nanomaterial since it was first isolated in 2004. Though the potential applications are immeasurable, it hasn't seen many practical applications because it's difficult and expensive to produce. Recently this has begun to change. Ford has recently managed to overcome those hurdles. With the help of Eagle Industries and XG Sciences, Ford found a way to introduce graphene into various coatings and foams used under the hood of Ford vehicles, boosting their strength and heat dissipation. Long story short, it was a rousing success and soon West Michigan Ford drivers will enjoy quieter vehicles with better-protected engine components. It is expected to go into production this year and will be included in the New Ford F-150 and Ford Mustang with more vehicles to follow. An article on the Official Ford Media Center tells more about how it was developed - check out some excerpts below! Cell Phones, Sporting Goods, And Soon, Cars: Ford Innovates With “Miracle” Material, Powerful Graphene For Vehicle Parts It’s in cell phones and even some sporting goods – and soon, for the first time in automotive, it will be under the hood in Ford vehicles. Ford Motor Company is announcing the use of graphene – a two-dimensional nanomaterial – in vehicle parts. Dubbed a “miracle material” by some engineers, graphene is 200 times stronger than steel and one of the most conductive materials in the world. It is a great sound barrier and is extremely thin and flexible. Graphene is not economically viable for all applications, but Ford, in collaboration with Eagle Industries and XG Sciences, has found a way to use small amounts in fuel rail covers, pump covers and front engine covers to maximize its benefits. “The breakthrough here is not in the material, but in how we are using it,” said Debbie Mielewski, Ford senior technical leader, sustainability and emerging materials. “We are able to use a very small amount, less than a half percent, to help us achieve significant enhancements in durability, sound resistance and weight reduction – applications that others have not focused on.” In 2014, Ford began working with suppliers to study the material and how to use it in running trials with auto parts such as fuel rail covers, pump covers and front engine covers. Generally, attempting to reduce noise inside vehicle cabins means adding more material and weight, but with graphene, it’s the opposite. Keep reading on Media.Ford.com. Borgman Head To Head: Mazda CX-5 vs. Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4, and Subaru Forester SUVs
Compare The 2018 Mazda CX-5 with Other Crossovers in West Michigan Borgman Mazda is your home for the New 2018 Mazda CX-5 in Grand Rapids. The Mazda CX-5 belongs to a segment that has seen enormous growth and competition in the last 10 years, and that's the small SUV segment, or as they're colloquially-known, "crossovers." more Read More People in West Michigan shopping for crossovers are generally looking for increased ride height, extra capability during the winter, and most of all, available options. Today, we're going to compare four different vehicles that share the crossover segment with the Mazda CX-5, and see how it stacks up in terms of engine power, towing capacity, cargo space, interior amenities, and more. The 2018 Mazda CX-5 has been popular with automotive journalists for a variety of reasons. It appeals to the tastes of more performance-oriented drivers and those reviewing comfort and amenities. Stephen Ottley from Drive.com was comparing the Mazda CX-5 with the Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4, and Subaru Forester. Here's what he had to say: "Where the CX-5 stands out from its competitors is its refinement. It feels the quietest and most upmarket of this quartet." - Stephen Ottley, Drive.com Other pundits like Eric Stafford at Car & Driver laud the CX-5 for its balance of spirited performance and handling with it's dignified, luxurious ride: "...its precise steering and composed cornering make for one helluva Sunday cruise. But it also soaks up rough roads without commotion and has the ride quality of crossovers that cost twice as much. This harmonious interplay of dynamics is unrivaled by competitors in this class." - Eric Stafford, Car & Driver The best way to know if the Mazda CX-5 is the crossover for you is to stop in and test drive one. Below, we've rounded up some highlights of the CX-5 and compared them to three popular competitors: the Honda CR-V, the Toyota RAV4, and the Subaru Forester. See how it stacks up below! The Mazda CX-5 In this growing and highly-competitive segment, there are a few key areas where the Mazda CX-5 truly shines. The first of which is the responsive 2.5L SKYACTIV engine, coupled to a 6-speed automatic transmission and capable of producing 187 horsepower and 186 lb/ft. of torque. Pair this with the dialed-in suspension and handling Mazda is known for and you have a crossover that makes every drive just a little more exciting. The interior is flush with features, including Mazda's unique approach to controlling the infotainment system: the Commander Control Knob. Though it takes a little getting used to, its controls are ergonomic and designed to let you interact with the CX-5's large, full-color LCD with minimal distraction from the road. The 2018 Mazda CX-5 also features 30.9 cu/ft. of cargo space, and can tow up to 2,000 lbs. Mazda has again delivered on that "something extra" quality they pour into all of their vehicles. The way Mazdas handle, accelerate, and the layout of the cabin are all taken into consideration - making the brand a popular choice for enthusiasts who want a little more excitement from their daily driver. The 2018 Mazda CX-5 starts at $24,150 and is the most affordable of the 4 SUVs we're looking at today. The Honda CR-V The Honda CR-V was recently redesigned in 2017 and remains a serious contender in the Japanese SUV import market. The 2.4L 4-cylinder engine produces a respectable 184 horsepower and 180 lbs/ft. of torque, and is capable of towing up to 1,500 pounds. The power is transmitted through a CVT, and All-Wheel is available. It averages 26/32 mpg city and highway fuel economy numbers respectively. The Honda CR-V features 39.2 cubic feet of cargo space, making it one of the roomiest crossovers of the bunch. The interior amenities are pretty nice too - especially the seamless infotainment screen and bold, easy-to-read gauge cluster. The 2018 Honda CR-V starts at $24,250, but you'll be able to drive home a late-model pre-owned one for much less than that at the Borgman Pre-Owned Vehicle Center. Check our Honda Used Inventory or visit us today. The Toyota RAV4 Toyota makes some of the most reliable vehicles in the world, and the RAV4 reflects that dedication to quality. The 2018 Toyota RAV4 makes 176 horsepower and 172 lbs/ft. of torque, and is capable of towing 1,500 pounds. The RAV4 also affords the choice of a 6-speed automatic or a CVT, accommodating both drivers who value performance or efficiency. On average, the Toyota RAV4 achieves fuel-efficiency numbers of 23 mpg city and 30 mpg highway, though CVT models do slightly better. Toyota put some work into the interiors of their vehicles over the last few years, and it shows on the 2018 RAV4. The infotainment system works well and intuitively, and the gauge cluster is readable and familiar. What looks really nice, however, is the use of an accent color throughout the cabin to create visual interest. Now the open design speaks to the rugged, "go-anywhere-ness" of the vehicle and makes the 38.4 cu/ft. of cargo space feel a little bigger. The 2018 Toyota RAV4 retails for $24,660. If you're looking for a great deal, keep an eye open for a late-model used Toyota RAV4 at Borgman's used lot. The Subaru Forester Ever-popular among different groups of drivers for different reasons, Subaru has cultivated these followings though one key common denominator: impressive build quality. The 2018 Subaru Forester is no exception. Under the hood, you'll find Subaru's 2.5L flat-four Boxter engine connected to their own tweaked-and-tuned version of a CVT transmission - complete with selectable "gear" ratios. The 2018 Subaru Forester interior looks nice and neat, with plenty of space inside for passengers or cargo. Behind the seats is 34.4 cu/ft. of space, and we will note that the display above the infotainment screen is a nice touch. This allows them to keep less-salient-to-driving information like average mpg and outside temperature out of the gauge cluster but still visible to the driver. The 2018 Subaru Forester can tow up to 1,500 pounds, which is about par for the segment. The engine produces 170 horsepower and 174 lbs/ft. of torque and all-wheel drive is standard. The 2018 Subaru Forester starts at $22,795 MSRP. If you see a late-model Subaru Forester in our Subaru Used Inventory, be sure to click the "Schedule Test Drive" button if you're interested. You may notice that all of the above vehicles include a Continuously-Variable Transmission or CVT except for the Mazda CX-5. Though CVTs do make for a smoother ride and provide a small boost in fuel economy, Mazda has pursued a different path to achieving these goals for their SKYACTIV-DRIVE Transmissions. CVTs have their benefits but they often have drawbacks too, and the biggest one is delayed response time. A Mazda with a CVT, at least in this current paradigm, simply wouldn't "feel like a Mazda" anymore. Mazda engineers developed a 6-speed automatic that brings all of the benefits of a CVT but without the sacrifices; preserving the thrilling driving dynamics Mazda is famous for. If you'd like to learn more about SKYACTIV-DRIVE Transmission, visit Borgman Mazda and talk with one of our friendly staff members. Check out some highlights from the article below! Mazda Team Joest Never Stops Challenging En Route to Best Result Of The Season The pair of Soul Red Crystal Mazda RT24-P prototypes finished second and third in the grueling Petit Le Mans at Road Atlanta on Saturday night, securing their podium positions right as the checkered flag fell. After qualifying in second and third, both Mazdas factored into the battle for the Prototype race lead throughout the ten-hour race. However, the two cars took different paths to the podium in the final IMSA race of the season. As the Prototype teams began to take their final pit stops, the team opted to give up track position to ensure enough both cars had fuel to make it to the finish. In the closing stages, the two went from sixth and seventh to third and fourth positions and then, on the final lap as both cars approached the checkered flag, they passed the second-placed car in the final corner. “It’s fantastic to get a double podium to close out the season. Certainly, this gives us a lot of positive momentum going into 2019.” says John Doonan, Director of Mazda Motorsports. "We are not fully satisfied, we wanted the top step and that’s what we came to do, but this represents an incredible effort by the team. This result also reflects a huge effort by Mazda Team Joest and Multimatic to get this race car where it is today, by AER to put together a season of great reliability, and by the Mazda Team Joest crew. Now, we focus on 2019 and the Rolex 24.” You can read the full post by visiting InsideMazda.MazdaUSA.com. West Michigan Business Owners: Order Commercial Vehicles Now for Section 179
Deduct up to $1,000,000 in 2018 Equipment Purchases This time of year, many business owners throughout West Michigan will be meeting with their accountants to discuss 2018 taxes. In some cases, they find some money left on the table in their Section 179 deductions. When this happens, many will come to Borgman Ford Commercial to expand their fleet and make sure their 2018 deductions are fully-utilized. more Read More What Is The Section 179 Deduction? Section 179 is a part of the IRS Tax Code that allows businesses to deduct the full purchase price of equipment from their taxes, as long as that equipment is purchased and put into service during that tax year. This deduction was added to help small to medium-sized business grow, better-serve their clients, and stimulate the economy. For more information, talk to your accountant, tax preparer, or visit IRS.gov. Can I Use Section 179 For Work Trucks & Vans? Yes you can, but just take note of a couple of things: For 2018, the deduction limit is $1,000,000, and the vehicle must be ready for work and in your motor pool by December 31st, 2018. The business must be the owner of the vehicle, and there are limits and guidelines regarding personal use. Do I Have To "Pay In Cash" To Get The Deduction? Nope. Actually, it can be more profitable to lease or finance your new commercial vehicle because the amount you deduct will almost always be more than your cash outlay for the year. What is the Best Source of Information About Section 179? There is a wealth of information on the IRS website including articles and downloads of all the forms you need. However, the best people to talk to are your accountant and your tax professional, as they'll know how all of this applies specifically to your business's finances. Ready To Add Ford Work Trucks & Vans To Your Fleet? Remember, many other businesses in West Michigan are going to be reviewing their deductions as well, so beating the 4th Quarter rush is key! Borgman How To: Windshield Wipers & Treatments Compared for West Michigan
The Borgman Service Center is committed to serving all of your automotive needs. This includes ensuring your vehicle's safety features are performing their absolute best. Being able to see clearly through your windshield is pretty important, especially since rain, snow, and foggy mornings make driving conditions a little more dangerous. The problem is, it often isn't something we think about until it becomes an issue. more Read More There are two fairly simple and inexpensive approaches you can take to ensure maximum visibility during a West Michigan rain or snow storm. In this Borgman How To, we'll be taking a look at high-quality wiper blades and windshield treatments, comparing them, and helping you determine which is right for you. Choosing The Right Wiper Blades Windshield wiper blades seem simple, but there are a few things to consider here, including the material the blade is made from and the construction of the assembly. Some wiper manufacturers will use natural rubber, synthetic rubber, or coated rubber on their blades. While there isn't a huge difference in performance, synthetic rubbers like silicone will last much longer than natural rubber but will cost more. Blades coated with Teflon or graphite present a happy medium - costing somewhere in the middle while granting the benefits of silicone blades. Other blades might use a mix of natural and synthetic rubber too. The construction of the blade assembly also plays a part. Lightweight frames will make your wiper motors happy, while clever designs will create downforce as air moves over them, which keeps them effective at high speeds. The frame also ensures that the pressure on the blade stays even across its full length - preventing streaks. Choosing which wiper blade is best for you is purely a preference versus cost question. For example, Motorcraft makes three different types of wiper blades. One that's an excellent all-season wiper blade, a more premium wiper blade with specialty coatings and wear indicators, and a wiper designed specifically for winter. Diamon-Fusion Windshield Treatments While having operational wiper blades on your vehicle is an absolute must, windshield treatments like Diamon-Fusion coating are elective. Whether or not you think they're necessary is entirely your call. However, it's worth noting here the major benefit of having your windshield coated: you'll use your wipers less, especially during those "will it actually start raining or won't it?" moments. Droplets of water "stick" to your windshield because the surface of the glass isn't perfectly smooth - at least not on a microscopic level. This texture gives the droplets a surface to hold on to in a sense, so what Diamon-Fusion does is help smooth these out. After treatment, raindrops bead up and roll right off the windshield while the vehicle is moving. This eliminates the need to constantly adjust your wiper interval during intermittent rain. The coating is 100% transparent, improves windshield clarity, and is guaranteed to never yellow or blister. It guards against chips and haziness and helps reduce nighttime glare too. For more information, visit us and ask about Diamon-Fusion application and other services provided by our friends at Great Lakes Chemical. Some will opt for the DIY approach with these treatments, and that's fine. In our experience though, these often need to be reapplied every few weeks. The Diamon-Fusion treatment is much more permanent, and has the benefit of their proprietary formula and professional application. Which Solution Is Best For West Michigan Drivers? Determining which of the above solutions is best is based entirely on your preferences. Our job is to show you what's available for your vehicle and help you make an informed decision. During the fall and going into winter, we generally feel that customers see more value in premium wiper blades than in the late spring and summer. The tradeoff to consider with wipers is that inexpensive ones cost less to install, but will make more noise and wear more quickly. The more premium blades are quieter and will perform better for longer. Adding a windshield treatment will protect your windshield glass and help your blades last longer, but should be thought of as a supplement rather than a solution. No matter what your automotive needs may be, the Borgman Service Center is here to help. Stop by for a visit or Schedule Your Next Appointment Online. We'll listen to your needs, make sure all of your questions are answered, and help you make informed decisions about your vehicle. Come see why we're the Best in the West!

How Ford Performance Innovations Make Their Way Into Borgman Ford's Selection
Whether you follow motorsports or not, Borgman always finds it interesting how breakthroughs in the performance garage eventually find their way into the vehicles on our lot in Grand Rapids. Several Ford innovations like the ever-popular EcoBoost engine started life this way, and now Ford is showing off some other cool tech they're working on for race cars that will eventually improve their entire lineup. more Read More In this article, we'll take a quick tour of a Ford Performance facility, explain some of the technology they're using there, and show how it benefits performance and 'civilian' vehicles alike. Inventions like their new simulator are helping them save time and money on these engineering budgets. This makes Ford a force to be reckoned with on the track, and deliver better vehicles to you at affordable prices. Read all about it in the excerpt below: Ford Performance Racing Technology Speeds Development of New Vehicles, Cuts Engineering Costs All-new research and development technology that helps make Ford Performance racecars faster also is helping Ford speed up development of its consumer vehicle lineup and improving the company’s operational fitness. Breakthroughs including a daily driving vehicle simulator, 3D race environment and other advancements are helping Ford improve product development fitness by reducing the number of physical prototypes. In its latest move, Ford is working to speed up vehicle development and reduce costs through a new production vehicle dynamic simulator in a 33,000-square-foot facility in the heart of NASCAR country in North Carolina. The initial purpose of the facility – up and running since 2014 – was to develop and test racecars virtually through an immersive simulator. But the tools have become so good so fast that Ford is now using the technology for its production vehicles. “The mission of Ford Performance is to transfer innovations from racetracks to the driveways of new Ford vehicle owners,” said Mark Rushbrook, global director, Ford Performance. “The tech center and this new driving simulator are two of the most important steps we have taken to help our mainstream engineering partners make sure the next Edge or F-150 is great to drive – even if you don’t check the performance model box.” You can read the full article by visiting Media.Ford.com. Ford Commissions Rebel Nell to Create Jewelry From Michigan Station Graffiti
Borgman Ford in Grand Rapids, MI is very eager to see what Ford's plans are for the historic Michigan Station in Corktown, Detroit. After the last train left the station in 1988, the station was ultimately abandoned and became something of a canvas for local graffiti artists to hone their craft. more Read More After Ford acquired the building, much of this artwork has cracked and fallen to the floors of the lobby and hallways, or otherwise become degraded. Ford enlisted the help of local women's' organization Rebel Nell to collect some of this fallen artwork and transform the fragments into beautiful, unique, and meaningful pieces of jewelry. Rebel Nell hires women who face barriers to employment in Detroit, and educates them on financial management, life wellness and entrepreneurship. You can read more about the project in Corktown and Rebel Nell in these excerpts from the Official Ford Media Center, or by visiting the links below. From Graffiti Art To Jewelry: Corktown Firm Rebel Nell Turns Pieces Of Michigan Central Station Into Unique Wearables For years, the walls, columns and archways inside Detroit’s abandoned Michigan Central Station served as a canvas for inspired graffiti artists and muralists. That fascinating chapter of the iconic building’s history isn’t about to be lost as Ford transforms the structure into an innovation hub to help it realize its vision for the future of transportation. Ford commissioned Rebel Nell, a Corktown social enterprise, to repurpose layers of graffiti paint from inside the massive building into one-of-a-kind pieces of jewelry. The result is the limited edition Michigan Central Station Collection, an assortment of pendants and earrings, each individually created from fallen graffiti. “There is a story in every piece,” says Shawn H. Wilson, manager, community engagement at Ford Fund. “Over the years Michigan Central Station became an artist’s playground. Artists went there to perfect their craft and build their brands. Part of the reason we’re doing this is to pay homage to the artists.” Ford worked with Rebel Nell to gather fallen graffiti from the lobby and other floors of the 500,000-square-foot building, which closed in 1988 and has remained vacant since. Wilson and Rebel Nell co-founder and CEO Amy Peterson said they were respectful of the artists’ works and only gathered graffiti that had fallen from surfaces. “Graffiti is truly art,” Wilson says. “Rebel Nell was able to help us identify artistic components inside the train station and which graffiti to use.” You can read the full article by visiting Media.Ford.com, or stop by RebelNell.com to see their products and learn more about their mission.
