Ford Celebrates Production of 10 Millionth Mustang Ford is celebrating the production of its 10 millionth Mustang – America’s best-selling sports car of the last 50 years and the world’s best-selling sports car three years straight. Mustang is a smile-maker in any language.” Ford is celebrating the milestone with employee celebrations at its Dearborn headquarters and its Flat Rock Assembly Plant, including flyovers from three WWII-era P-51 Mustang fighter planes and Mustangs produced for more than five decades parading from Dearborn to Flat Rock, where the Mustang currently is manufactured. Coming Soon: The Faster & More Powerful Mazda MX-5 Miata
The 2019 Mazda MX-5 Miata Arrives at Borgman Mazda in Grand Rapids Fall 2018 Whether you've just recently taken a Miata for a test drive at Borgman or have been a fan of the roadster for years, you know just how much fun they are to drive. The low curb weight, spirited engine, responsive handling (and of course the optional roof) all make this the perfect summer car for cruising West Michigan. They're hands-down the most fun you'll have in a roadster relative to their price tag. more Read More Though if you're ok with waiting until fall, Mazda has just announced some enhancements for the 2019 model year. These include increased efficiency and power through lighter engine components, a much higher rev limit, color options and more. This latest article from Inside Mazda tells the full story - take a look at some excerpts below: 2019 Mazda MX-5 Miata Packs More Punch, Features Mazda’s Revised Roadster Goes On Sale In The U.S. This Fall The Mazda MX-5 Miata has never been about power; it's a car whose sole purpose is to help the driver and passenger fall in love with driving. But, a little extra power never hurts, which comes as one aspect of numerous updates for the 2019 model year. Mazda’s engineers enriched MX-5’s SKYACTIV-G 2.0-liter engine with the goals of improved response, performance, feel and efficiency. The net results are 181 horsepower at 7,000 rpm—a 17-percent improvement—and 151 lb-ft of torque at 4,000 rpm, with a richer torque curve throughout MX-5’s entire rev range. Speaking of rev range, redline has increased from 6,800 rpm to 7,500 rpm. Engineers were able to increase performance through several means, including: Reducing internal mass and friction: Each piston has been reduced 27g in mass, thanks to a minimized skirt area. Connecting rods are 41g lighter than previous units. Reducing exhaust loss: The upgraded engine carries an increased valve opening angle and valve lift height. The inner diameter of the exhaust manifold has also been increased. The net results are a 30-percent reduction in pumping losses. Improved combustion: Reconfigured intake ports and new high-diffusion, higher-pressure fuel injectors improve the tumble and swirl of fuel in the cylinder and better-atomize fuel. The benefit is improved efficiency and torque at all rpm. Dual-mass flywheel: Replacing the single-mass flywheel with a low-inertia, dual-mass flywheel improves smoothness and responsiveness. A new exhaust system with richer sound quality. New final drive ratio: The transmission's final drive ratio has been increased from 3.454 to 3.583 in models equipped with an automatic transmission in order to improve linear response to match the driver's intentions. Gear ratios are otherwise unchanged from previous models. As a result of numerous changes, MX-5 is quicker, more responsive and aims to be more engaging to drive, adhering to Mazda's unique Jinba Ittai—"horse and rider as one"—engineering philosophy. A Closer Look at the New 2018 Mazda CX-5 Interior
Have you seen the interior of the New 2018 Mazda CX-5? If not, Borgman Mazda in Grand Rapids would be happy to give you the grand tour. There are a number of driver-focused tweaks and changes over the previous generation that allow you to comfortably adjust the stereo or climate settings, charge your devices or reach for a beverage - all while staying focused on the road. more Read More Mazda put a lot of care and attention into the layout and design of the Mazda CX-5's interior, and the best way to experience it is to visit our showroom and take one out for a spin. If you're short on time though, we've also included some snippets from an article on InsideMazda: check out some of the highlights below! 1. The Center Console As one of the most used storage areas in the vehicle, the center console saw refinements that give you smarter storage options. The charging ports under the armrest were moved in order to place your devices in a more convenient location while charging. It means you won’t be balancing your phone or getting wires twisted every time you adjust the radio volume. 2. The Glove Compartment The glove compartment is often taken for granted and is usually slammed shut to prevent everything from falling out. However, Mazda designers understand that it also provides a useful compartment to keep important documents organized and your valuables out of sight. Designers reshaped its interior to comfortably accommodate a 10-inch tablet. They added premium materials to enhance the appearance and create a soft lining for storing devices. Of course, it’s up to you to figure out how much more can be crammed around the tablet. But rest assured that Mazda has gone the extra mile to help keep your devices pampered and protected. 3. The Rear Center Armrest Previously, the rear center armrest was primarily used as a divider between squabbling siblings. Now, it can focus on a role as a storage and charging station. The rear center armrest in CX-5 Grand Touring models folds down to reveal storage for mobile devices and includes two optional USB charging ports to help keep second-row passengers connected, entertained and fully charged. There are even more interior features to explore in the 2018 Mazda CX-5. Either check out the full list on InsideMazda.MazdaUSA.com, read a more in-depth feature here, or swing by the Borgman Mazda showroom for the full experience. Ford & Vanderbilt University Study the Phantom Traffic Jam Phenomenon
Borgman Ford would like to wish everyone in West Michigan a fun, happy, and safe Fourth of July weekend. Though Independence Day isn't until Wednesday, US 131, I-96, and I-196 are sure to be packed this weekend with people flocking up north or to the lakeshore. more Read More If you've ever experienced a sudden stop on the expressway, and after crawling along for a while, discover there was no apparent reason for the slowdown, you've just witnessed a "Phantom Traffic Jam." Apart from being a nuisance, Phantom Traffic Jams cause headaches for logistics companies too, so Ford and Vanderbilt University teamed up to identify the causes and how to prevent them. The biggest reason was reactionary braking, and we already have the tech for that: Ford's Adaptive Cruise Control! Watch the video below and read some excerpts from the Official Ford Media Center to learn more. We Have The Tech: Ford, Vanderbilt Show We Don’t Have To Wait For Self-Driving Cars To Mitigate Phantom Traffic Jams Ford and Vanderbilt University researchers are demonstrating this week that so-called phantom traffic jams could be minimized with widespread use of adaptive cruise control available today in most Ford vehicles. The team conducted what is believed to be the largest, most realistic demonstration of its kind, showing that existing technology could help minimize phantom traffic jams, which happen for seemingly no reason and can cause hazardous traffic backups. On a closed Ford test track, 36 drivers simulated normal highway traffic using adaptive cruise control, which can automatically slow down and speed up to keep pace with the car in front without getting fatigued or distracted. Those drivers then drove the same course, but without the technology – meaning they had to manually brake and accelerate the vehicle. The results: vehicles using adaptive cruise control reduced the impact of a braking event more than those vehicles without the activated technology. Even with just one in three vehicles using adaptive cruise control, the test yielded similar traffic-busting benefits. “A fun Fourth of July family road trip can quickly become irritating when traffic slows to a crawl – especially once you learn there was no reason for the gridlock,” said Michael Kane, supervisor, Ford Co-Pilot360 Technology. “We encourage Ford owners who have adaptive cruise control to use it during their summer travels in the hope this smart technology today can be that first step to help ease commutes.” Ford currently offers adaptive cruise control on 71 percent of U.S. models. All 2018 CX-9 models feature standard Smart City Brake Support (SCBS) for the first time, a technology that can automatically apply the brakes in certain situations below 19 mph. SCBS is a technology that comes as part of Mazda’s i-ACTIVSENSE suite of safety systems. Additionally, Blind Spot Monitoring and Rear Cross-Traffic Alert are also newly standard for 2018. The New Mazda3 Named Kelley Blue Book's Coolest Car Under $20K for the 5th Year Straight!
Borgman Mazda was delighted to learn that the Mazda3 was placed at the top of KBB.com's Coolest New Car list for the 5th year in a row. Although, as any West Michigan Mazda driver will tell you, this isn't terribly surprising either. The current generation of Mazda3 has many infotainment, comfort, and driver-assist features not usually found in its class or price point. It has been engineered around Mazda's Jinba Ittai design principles - a Japanese term used to describe the harmony between a horse and rider - which ensures a thrilling driving experience no matter where you're going. All of this is supplemented by an impressive 40 highway mpg and a refined exterior body style. more Read More This recent article from InsideMazda tells more about the Kelley Blue Book "cool cars" list and how they're ranked. Here is an excerpt from the article: Mazda3 Tops Kelley Blue Book’s Coolest New Cars For The Fifth Year In A Row MP3 players, DVDs and PDAs – not many things have remained “cool” over the past 15 years. The compact Mazda3 is an exception, however, appearing on Kelley Blue Book’s 10 Coolest Cars list every year since the car debuted in 2003. To make the recognition even cooler, Mazda3 takes the No. 1 spot for the fifth year in a row. “Available in both sedan and hatchback form, the Mazda3 offers practicality that appeals to compact car buyers, with sportiness that makes even daily chores more fun,” said Michael Harley, executive editor for Kelley Blue Book. Two longstanding criteria – that the vehicle is both fun-to-drive and fun-to-own – are critical among the deciding factors of what Kelley Blue Book editors freely admit is a very subjective “cool factor,” which is also the overarching No. 1 criterion for a vehicle to place on this list. Each vehicle is available for purchase starting at under $20,000, using Kelley Blue Book’s Fair Purchase Price as the yardstick. You can read the full article by visiting InsideMazda.MazdaUSA.com. Ford EcoSport Thrives in a Generation Z-Fueled Subcompact SUV Boom
Since the arrival of the New Ford EcoSport earlier this year, many younger auto shoppers at Borgman have been pleasantly surprised by it. Not only does it have all of the features they're looking for in a vehicle such as Ford SYNC 3, FordPass, and four-wheel drive, but also that it's incredibly affordable. more Read More Ford has been watching this segment closely especially now that the oldest of Generation Z are seniors in college. In fact, subcompact SUVs like the Ford EcoSport have experienced meteoric growth among that age group in the last year over their compact car counterparts. This latest article in the Official Ford Media Center explains more about why this might be; below are some excerpts. It’s Not All About Millennials; Gen Z Drivers Help Make Subcompact Utility The Fastest-Growing Auto Segment The music is different and fashion senses change. But when it comes to driving, the young adults who make up Gen Z – people born after 1995 – share plenty with their parents and grandparents. They love SUVs. Gen Z makes up more than one-quarter of the U.S. population. Nearly one-third have reached driving age and are already having an impact on the auto industry. Despite their reputation for being a ride-share-loving generation, 92 percent own or plan to own a vehicle – according to a 2016 study by KBB/Autotrader. As to what type of vehicle today’s youngest drivers covet, many are already shifting away from once-popular subcompact cars and gravitating toward the still-young subcompact SUV segment. Just four years ago, 18- to 24-year-olds in the United States purchased 8,121 subcompact cars and only 443 subcompact SUVs. In 2017, that same age group purchased 3,981 subcompact cars and 2,840 subcompact SUVs – a 541 percent spike for subcompact SUVs. “I’d never heard of EcoSport, but I loved it the minute I saw it,” said Kelly Oswald, 19, one of the first EcoSport owners in the United States. “I went in looking to buy a used car. I didn’t expect there to be an affordable option to buy a new car.” You can read the full article by visiting Media.Ford.com.
